Next Evolution for Starlight Kitforge: The Scene System
Now that both the Lightscape and Soundscape editors are taking shape, I've been thinking about the next logical step — combining them into full Scenes.
A Scene is a complete snapshot of an environment — one specific Lightscape paired with one specific Soundscape. This allows for rich, immersive storytelling within a single diorama.
How Scenes Would Work
Instead of just running one lightscape and one soundscape at a time, users would be able to create multiple Scenes and switch between them.
Example: Three Starships Diorama
Scene 1: Peaceful Patrol - Lightscape: Calm running lights, slow scanner sweeps, steady ship lighting - Soundscape: Ambient engine hum, occasional relaxed radio chatter, soft scanner pings
Scene 2: Combat Engagement - Lightscape: Bright orange and white explosion flashes, damaged ship sections flickering, emergency lights pulsing - Soundscape: Intense laser fire, explosions, urgent radio chatter, battle alarms
You could even have a third scene — maybe "Critical Damage" with failing ship lights and more somber audio.
The Scene Sequencer
The proposed Scene Sequencer would let users:
- Create and name multiple scenes
- Assign a Lightscape + Soundscape combination to each scene
- Arrange scenes in a specific order for storytelling
- Choose playback mode:
- Sequential – Play scenes one after another
- Random – Automatically jump between scenes with optional cooldowns
- Manual – Let the user trigger scene changes
Transition Options
To make scene changes feel natural, we could support different transition types:
- Cut – Instant switch between scenes
- Crossfade – Smooth fade between lighting states and audio over a set duration
Additional Possibilities
- Global Effect Layers: Some lighting effects (like random explosion flashes) could sit outside of individual scenes and be triggered globally during combat scenes.
- Scene-Aware Lights: Certain lights could behave differently depending on which scene is active.
- Master Intensity: Each scene could have an overall intensity control to make peaceful scenes feel calm and battle scenes feel chaotic.
Why This Matters
This Scene system would transform Starlight Kitforge from a lighting and sound tool into a complete narrative engine for physical models. A single diorama could tell an entire story — moving from peace to conflict to resolution — all through coordinated light and sound.
It's still early in the planning phase, but I'm really excited about the creative possibilities this opens up.
